O.R. Tambo District Municipality

Background:

O.R. Tambo District Municipality is situated in the north-eastern part of the Eastern Cape Province. The district incorporates large portion of the former Transkei inland areas and along the wild cost.

The O.R. Tambo district municipality incorporates the former magisterial districts of Mqanduli, Libode, Ngqeleni, Umtata, Qumbu, Lusikisiki, Bizana, Flagstaff, Port St.Johns and Ntabankulu. The newly established municipalities are Mbizana, Ntabankulu, Ingquza, Port St,Johns, Nyandeni, Mohontlo and King Sabata Dalindyebo.

O.R. Tambo has the largest population in the Eastern Cape and has the second highest population density which is 108 people in one square kilometre. But this varies widely across the municipalities, from 220 people per square kilometre in Nyandeni to 53 people per Square kilometre in Ntabankulu. King Dalinyebo Sabata Municipality has 24.8% of the population.

The O.R. Tambo district is poorest district in the Eastern Cape in terms of all poverty measures. It has the lowest HDI (0.45) and the highest poverty gap (2 231 million) in the Eastern Cape. The number of people living in poverty is also high in this district (64.6%).

The population is predominantly African (99.53%). All other population groups are very few in this district.

The population pyramid that represents the age distribution of the district shows very broad base and very lean elevation. The type of pyramid shows all the characteristics of under development. About 45% of population are below 15 years of age. Almost 58% of the population is below 20 years.

Women outnumber men in the O.R. Tambo district :45% of the population are males and 55% are females.
