Cacadu District Municipality

Background:

Cacadu District Municipality consists of areas that have been previously under Cape Provincial Administration. The District incorporates the former magisterial districts of Bathurst, Alexandria, Somerset East, Pearston, Jansenville, Steytlerville, Humansdorp, Hankey, Albany, Willowmore, Joubertina, Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet and Kirkwood. The District consists of Camdeboo, Blue Care, Ikhwezi, Makana, Ndlambe, Sunday’s River Valley, Baviaans, Kouga and Kou-Kammas municipalities.

Cacadu district municipality has the lowest population density which is 7 people in one square kilometre. The low population density is mainly due to farms, game parks and semi arid areas in this district. Baviaans and Ikhwezi municipalities have the smallest population in this district.

The poverty indicators of Cacadu district and Nelson Mandela Metropole are not alarming as in case of districts such as O.R. Tambo, Alfred Nzo, Amatole, Chris Hani and Ukhahlamba districts. This district has the second highest HDI (0.56), second lowest number of people living in poverty (59.8%) and second lowest poverty gap.

The Cacadu municipality and Nelson Mandela Metropole show diversity of population. The African population dominates in Cacadu as like other districts. Coloured population is the second highest population (36.3%) in this district.

Proportionate age distribution can be noticed in the population pyramid by having considerably low young population. High proportion of economically active population can be noticed in this district in comparison with other districts.

Women outnumber men in the Cacadu district :48% of the population are males and 52% are females.
