WAR VETERANS GRANT
DEFINITION OF GRANT
The war veteran grant is a monthly payment made to veterans from the age of 60 years and older, and veterans under 60 years old, due to medical reasons who once served in the South African army during certain years.

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION
War Veterans Grant is in accordance with the Social Assistance Act 59 of 1992is a person who participated in any of the following wars;

  • First World War.
  • Second World war
  • British or Dominion War
  • Korean War.

To prove the above a certificate of service is required when applying for the grant.

PURPOSE/AIMS OF THIS GRANT
This grant is intended for war veterans from the age of 60 years and older, and also veterans under the age of 60 years provided that the veteran is physically or mentally unfit for employment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE GRANT
The applicant of this grant must be 60 years old. A grant may, however be awarded to a veteran under the age of 60 years provided he is physically or mentally unfit for employment. In such case the application must be accompanied by a medical report completed by a medical officer.

WHO MANAGES THE GRANT?
Social security officials employed by the Department of Social Development manage the grant.

CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION
The applicant must be a South African citizen and resident in South Africa at the time of application.

To become eligible, the following means test in terms of the income status of the applicant is applicable;

  • For a single person, the total value of asset shall not exceed R252,000 and monthly income shall not exceed R718.
  • For a married person, the total value of asset shall not exceed R504,000 and monthly income shall not exceed R718.

Another important eligibility requirement is that, the applicant must not be in receipt of any other grant from the state.

The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in one of the following state institutions;

  • a prison
  • a psychiatric hospital
  • a state home for the aged
  • a care and treatment centre and
  • a treatment centre for drug dependents.

If the applicant is admitted to a psychiatric hospital for observation and treatment on a temporary basis, the grant can be paid for a period not exceeding 6 months. This also applicable to disability and old age grants.

Some of the private institutions are contracted by the state to take full responsibility for the care and maintenance of the residents.

In this instance if an applicant is a resident in the aforementioned institution the grant would be reduced to 25% of the full grant amount as from the 1st day of the 4th month from the date of admission. This is applicable to all other grants.
