| The Head of Department, Denver A.
Webb, was born and raised in the Transkei. He received his
primary schooling at Butterworth and completed his high
school years at a Roman Catholic boys’ school, De la Salle
College, in East London. He holds a BA (with History and
African History as majors) and an HDE(PG) Sec. from the
University of Cape Town; History Honours from UNISA and an
MA (History) from Rhodes University. He also has a post
graduate archives diploma from Technikon SA.
After in teaching in Cape Town he took up a post in 1984
at the King William’s Town Museum as Education Officer and,
later, as Curator of History. He moved to the Ciskei
Historical Monuments Commission as Deputy Director in 1989.
In 1996 he was appointed as the Director for Museums and
Heritage in the then Department of Education, Culture and
Sport. In 2001 he was later appointed as the General Manager
for Corporate Services.
His experience in the Department of Sport, Recreation,
Arts and Culture includes serving as the Acting Head of
Department and Accounting Officer in 1998, 2000-2001,
2003-2004.
He is married with 2 children and his hobbies and
interests include post-modernist literature, Blues music,
mountain biking and writing history guides and articles. In
his limited spare time he is working on a guide to historic
sites and battlefields of the Eastern Cape.
